Landis+Gyr (SIX:LAND) and the Gas Distribution Network Operators in Northern Ireland are bringing the future of gas prepayment to Northern Ireland. Covering around 217,000 households and businesses, the program will make Northern Ireland one of the first regions to adopt Landis+Gyr’s “Future Gas” technology.
The solution combines the ultrasonic gas meter technology with the AIM platform, and a cloud-based Prepayment Management System delivered as SaaS. Customers will be able to top up anytime via mobile phone, track usage and help customers manage their accounts, removing the constraints of the current card-based systems.
To ensure reliable and future-proof connectivity, the solution uses NB-IoT technology supported by Vodafone, designed specifically for the energy sector and offering strong coverage across Northern Ireland, including border areas.
“This partnership marks a step change in how gas prepayment is delivered. Customers will have more choice and convenience, while utilities gain efficiencies and prepare for a low-carbon gas future,” said Rob Harper, Head of Sales and Country Lead UK at Landis+Gyr.
“We are proud that Northern Ireland will be at the forefront of modernising the gas prepayment solution, improving service for consumers and building the foundations for tomorrow’s energy transition,” said Denver Wasson, Director of Engineering at Phoenix Energy.
The Northern Ireland Gas Industry continues to grow its customer base on an annual basis and with c. 200,000 properties in NI continuing to use home heating oil, the near-term opportunity for householders to switch from oil to natural gas remains strong. The Gas Distribution Network Operators are also working with industry partners to develop biomethane solutions locally, a like for like replacement of natural gas, that is produced using organic and agricultural waste products.
With this initiative, Northern Ireland sets a benchmark for how modern gas systems can deliver greater value, flexibility, and resilience for customers, gas suppliers and the Gas Distribution Network Operators. The “Future Gas” programme underlines Landis+Gyr’s and the Gas Distribution Network Operators’ commitment to enabling the energy transition with technology that is ready for today and adaptable for tomorrow.
